General Authority Keeps Using “Staying in the Luxury Yacht” Analogy

SALT LAKE CITY — In the Sunday afternoon session of General Conference, Elder M. Russell Ballard reminded everyone to stay in the boat, especially if that boat were a Sycara V superyacht.

Ballard began by saying, “A friend of mine took his son on a trip down the Colorado River, not ideal for a luxury yacht like the Sycara V, but a nice river nonetheless.”

"If we were in the yacht, we would probably just avoid story waters all together."
“If we were in that yacht, we would probably just avoid stormy waters altogether.”

The former businessman continued to delineate the specifications of the boat by telling those in the audience, “remember the rule: stay in the boat. But, hold on, who would ever leave the Sycara V? We’re talking about 200-plus feet of pure extravagance here, not some podunk fishing raft.”

"Put on your lifejackets, but you probably wouldn't need it if we were in the Sycara V."
“Put on your life jackets, but you probably wouldn’t need it if we were in the Sycara V.”

The longtime member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles answered doubts made by the youth, saying, “I’ve heard some people say that Church leaders live in a bubble, which, if we were in the Sycara V and were capable of cruising the ocean at 14.5 knots with a group of some of the world’s richest and most powerful people, would you want to leave?”

“If any of you have fallen out of the boat,” concluded Ballard, “we’d help you get back in, but seriously, why would anyone get out of such a luxurious yacht to just flounder aimlessly in turbulent sea water?”
